Introduction

The title of this site is "SoloBassist.com" (pronounced solo bassist dot com), providing an easy way for people to remember the address of the site and pass it on to others (a common scheme used by TalkBass.com, CNN.com, Buy.com, etc.). The purpose of this site is to provide a meeting place and resources for solo bassists and solo bass music fans in order to help expand the availability, acceptance and boundaries of solo bass music. In addition to electric bassists, acoustic bassists and double bassists, players of other bass-ranged stringed instruments are welcome including players of all forms of extended range basses, and two-handed tapping instruments such as the Warr Guitar, Chapman Stick® and Mobius Megatar.

The main feature of this site is the forum which is designed to facilitate the organization of solo bass performances and allow solo bassists to meet other solo bassists in their area and around the world. This forum is driven by vBulletin, a high quality and robust bulletin board system which is also the basis of TalkBass.com.

The forum allows members to write their own profiles which will be configured with custom fields providing what will effectively be a database of solo bassists from around the world. This database can be searched to find solo bassists in a particular area. There will also be discussion forums specific to different areas where members can organize and discuss setting up shows. There is also a calendar where shows can be posted. Other discussion forums will also be created over time for the discussion of solo bass specific topics. Some solo bassists will have their own forums where they can post gig announcements, blogs, and communicate with other members.

Solo Bass =/= Bass Solo

Though they have similar names, the genre of "solo bass" music is quite different from a "bass solo". A bass solo is generally a part of a piece of music where the bass plays as the soloist either with or without accompaniment. Bass solos can also exist outside of a piece of music as a relatively brief compliment to the ubiquitous drum solo (as evidenced by the popular "Very bad if drums stop." joke). Bass solos are often extravagant and utilize a variety of techniques. Being given a relatively short amount of time to express themselves, bassists will often "pull out all the stops". Though I am fairly certain that most bassists and bass enthusiasts are as fond of the bass solo as I am, that is not what this site is about.

The focus of this site is on Solo Bass music, or more specifically, the bassists who play this music. Solo Bass is music played by a single bassist in the form of a composition, improvisation or combination of the two. Looping devices may be used which allow a bassist to record a track of music and immediately play over it. Recorded music that consists of multiple tracks of bass music may also be considered Solo Bass music as can music that consists of only bass and a percussion accompaniment.
